Church Choir

Church Choir

St. Mary's has a strong musical tradition and the Church Choir provides music for services every Sunday.

The robed choir sings at morning and evening services on Sunday, with the exception of an all-age Family Service, usually on the second Sunday morning of each month.

The choir leads congregational worship and sings an anthem during the receiving of communion at the 10.30 a.m. service.  Sung Mattins, with choral settings of the Te Deum and Jubilate, appears on the fifth Sunday morning of the month, which is about fthree times a year.

The choir leads Evensong on Sunday evenings at 6.30 p.m.,with full Choral Evensong on the third Sunday of the month, at which choral settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are performed. If there is a non-sacramental service in the morning (normally the second Sunday of the month), the 6.30 p.m. service takes the form of Communion, when the choir sings a different service setting and contributes an anthem.

All choir performances are cancelled until further notice due to the Coronavirus epidemic.

We are a friendly group of about 20 people, of all ages and varying degrees of musical knowledge. There is no audition, nor commitment required to attend all services, but members enjoy singing, do their best to the glory of God, and possess a sense of humour!

Music from the Tudor age to the present is performed with enthusiasm and panache, and special services, such as Christmas and Easter, contain a wide range of church music suitable for a capable church choir. The Church Organist is Anne Clements, much in demand locally, who plays every Sunday evening and at Mattins. There is a rota of organists who play for Sunday morning services, who work with the singers on these occasions.

The choir can never have too many members, especially as pressure is not put on choir members regarding attendance. It is fully understood that being in a church choir is a big commitment, so we all work as a team and share the load. We now have children singing in the choir who come with their parent. Although we are not yet providing formal voice training, singing with others is healthy for body and mind and young people benefit greatly from working with adults.

Rehearsals on Thursday evenings are at 7.30 p.m. in the church, juniors leave after about half-an-hour, while the adults continue till 8.45. New members of all abilities and all ages are welcome to come along and join in, or to sing with us as we practice half-an-hour before each Sunday service.

The choir is also available for weddings and other social occasions, such as carol singing. Last Christmas choir members helped to raise £264 for St Christopher’s Hospice and over £250 for Welcare in Bromley while singing carols in Moorland Road and The Glades respectively.
